the iPhone as a viable marketing platform (considerations)

Theres is not doubt that 2007 was the Year of the iPhone, the overhyped, loved and hated new invention from Apple shocked the industry and sent tremors to the competitors, the iphone created new business oportunities to the mac market, inmediately we’ve found buying unlocking applications or getting the new protective covers for the new little device.
Google deployed all of its consumer applications to the iphone, Yahoo jumped to the bandwagon with its services and day by day you can enjoy high quality products and services related to the iphone and if speculations are a reflex of what comes next, the Macworld 2008 will blow us away with more and more features from Apple and others that have realized the platform business potential.
But the iphone marketing potential hasn’t been reached and there is more to come in this area, for its part Google is fighting for a piece of the 700mhz spectrum and you can bet that they won’t use it for any telecommunication device, they will use it to provide real time mobile ads in your Android powered device. Got it? Apple is rumored to be helping Google in the bidding, and this is where Google and Apple collide, because the iphone is out of the box the most complete package for Google to deploy any mobile ad strategy. There is most be something brewing with these two look-alike companies.
Recently Microsoft started serving mobile ads in their Windows Mobile powered phones, but believe me: “Barking dogs don’t bite”, Microsoft is out of focus and too obfuscated with Vista, so there is a chance for Apple to plant the marketing seed with the iphone and penetrate more market with the help of Google, imagine a NBA iphone or Ipod, loaded with clips, images, wallpapers, ringtones, music and statics; a New York Yanquee or Red Soxs based iphone or ipod full of paraphernalia, team photos and more. Imagine that…. a Star Wars Iphone Edition loaded with movie clips, behind the scenes, wallpapers and more…. Nobody knows about marketing products better than Apple, this is their DNA.
It is almost impossible to guess Apple direction with the iPhone or iPod, but it is for sure that if Apple decided to open a little bit of its devices to the marketeers, google, hollywood and TV Network there will be more money in Apple’s pockets every quarter and there won’t be any chance for the competition.
If you consider that the ipod saturation will help Microsoft’s Zune, try to rethink it again, the ipod and the iphone are in their early stage, because Apple knows how to change to a faster lane even if doing so could hurt Apple itself, they done it with the ipod Mini, with Mac OS X for Intel and would do it whenever they consider it is needed. Apple is a born risk taker.
There is more and more planned for the iphone and ipod as a platform, maybe Macworld 2008 help us see a little of what Apple is thinking.
