ShoppingApple and DoCoMo in talk about the iPhone
NTT DoCoMo said Wednesday that its president had met with Apple chief executive Steve Jobs amid reports that Japan’s top mobile telephone operator is in talks to launch the iPhone here.
“It is true that Mr Steve Jobs of Apple Inc. and our president (Masao) Nakamura held a meeting,” an NTT DoCoMo spokesman said, declining to reveal the timing or content of the discussions.
Apple sees DoCoMo as its top choice to market the iPhone, Japanese news agency Kyodo News reported quoting anonymous sources.
DoCoMo, however, may be reluctant to accept Apple‘s demand for a share of subscriber revenue, the news agency said.
NTT DoCoMo is competing with smaller rival Softbank Mobile, which has also entered talks with Apple about acquiring the sole rights to offer the iPhone in Japan, the Nikkei business daily reported.
Apple has signed exclusive distribution contracts in the United States with AT and T, in Germany with Deutsche Telekom, in Britain with O2, and in France with Orange for rights to market the iPhone — an Internet-enabled mobile telephone, portable digital media player and digital camera in one.
